This paper analyzes O.A Bushnell’s the Return of Lono from postcolonial perspective, focusing on ambivalence colonial discourse and resulting contradiction which ultimately undermine Western claim superiority. novel dramatizes arrival Captain Cook’s expedition Hawai’ian isles first-person perspective Jonathan Forrest as he reminiscences their prior expedition. The Westerners’ view an idealized imagined Hawai’i constructs a space is exotic primitive while simultaneously promotes idea beauty welcoming. While previously abiding paradigm denigrates natives animalistic savage Others, Forrest’s unsettles this dominant thought contextualizes within discourse. employs concept contact zone stated by Pratt also theory proposed Ashcroft et al. finding concurs that every exertion will result in resistance nature, itself intertwined with ambivalence.
